Temple Places 7th In Women’s Sprint Medley Relay at 2015 Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, PA. 4/24/2015 – Behind a strong performance in the 800 meter leg by Blanca Fernandez the Temple Owls won their heat and placed 7th overall in the College Women’s Sprint Medley Relay at the 2015 Penn Relays.  The Owls recorded a time of 3:56.77 to get a place in the top ten.  Fernandez ran a split of 2:11.79.

The Cherry and White team was made up of Bianca St. Fluer, Jimmia McCluskey, Kenya Gaston, and Fernandez. The Owls were in a later heat along with the University of Pennsylvania Quakers.  Penn finished second in the heat turning in a time of 4:05.51 for the 20th spot.

Gaston ran a strong 400 meter leg to pass the baton to Fernandez roughly 3 seconds ahead.  Fernandez kept the lead in the first lap, then pulled away in the last 400 meters to cruise to the win by 9 seconds.

The Penn team was Taylor McCorkle, Lydia Ali, Gina Alm, and Gabby Cuccia.

The Oregon Ducks won the Championship of America as 800 meter runner Annie Leblanc chased down Natoya Goule of Clemson down the final straightaway to take the title.  Oregon posted a time of 3:44.59.  Clemson was second running the distance in 3:44.71.
