Penn Relays – Day One Top 10 Philly Finishers

Penn Runner Olivia Morganti Sets School Record Winning the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase

Day One of the Penn Relays is complete. An historic day as Olivia Morganti set a school record for the University of Pennsylvania winning the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 9:57.94. She took the lead in lap 7 of the race running a split of 1:18. Morganti’s time ranked 5th in the East and 10th in the nation this season.

In the Men’s 1500m College Championship three local runners finished in the top ten of the competition. Devin Comber of Villanova came from 11th place to finish second running a time of 3:43.25. He covered the last 400m in 55.25 to challenge for the lead. Just behind Comber was Penn’s Edwin Klanke who ran a 3:43.52. Klanke ran in third or fourth place for most of the race. Villanova’s Xian Shivley placed 10th finishing the race in 3:45.08. All of the runners were in the first heat.

Ryan Matulonis took second place in the College Men’s 400m Hurdles. He covered the distance in 51.25, Devin Nugent of Pitt turned in the fastest time in 50.84. Both runners ran in the same heat.

La Salle 5000m runner Taonga Mbambo took eighth place in the College Men’s race crossing the finish line in 13:59.56. Mbanbo was in third place after 3400m.

In the field Alexandra Payne took 9th place in the College Women’s Hammer Throw. The Villanova Wildcat threw a distance of 51.58m on her third throw.
