Philly Women’s College Basketball Weekly Awards

Games of February 19 – 25, 2024

Players of the Week

The Temple Owls who improved to 11 – 4 in The American and hold sole possession of first place. The team played three games this week. After the Monday win over Tulane, the starting five were present in the post game interview room as the team tied for the top spot in the league. Aleah Nelson, Tarriyonna Gary, Demi Washington, Tiarra East, and Rayne Tucker took time at the microphone. A Texas road trip loomed next, and the Cherry and White swept games at UTSA and Rice. Defense was a big reason for the turnaround. The Owls held the opposition to 19% shooting from the three-point line. The Owls forced 44 turnovers during the week, and 15 were by steals. Coach Diane Richardson said that defense turns into offense. And on defense the key is ELO – Early, Loud, and Often. On offense there were contributions from all players who saw the floor. Twelve different times a Temple player scored in double digits. East led the way with a total of 42 points and 27 rebounds. Nelson contributed 34 points, while Gary scored 32 total points. Tucker pulled down 27 total caroms. From beyond the arc Temple made 18 of 47. A full team effort earns them our Players of the Week award.
