Penn Stars Ivy Play On a Winning Note, Drexel Wins on the Road for First CAA Victory; La Salle Splits Weekend

Games of September 27 – October 3, 2021

It was a game of firsts for the University of Pennsylvania Quakers. Emily Pringle scored her initial goal and Coach Casey Brown got Ancient Eight win number one with a 2 – 0 victory over Cornell. Paige Keaton added an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Going to South Carolina the Drexel Dragons won 1 – 0 at the College of Charleston for their initial CAA victory. Annalena O’Reilly scored in the fifth minute and goal keeper Miyuki Schoyen turned in her first shutout of the season. The La Salle Explorers found themselves on both sides of a shutout during the homestand. La Salle won 1 – 0 against Rhode Island, then fell 2 – 0 to Richmond. Mary Kate Vinkler scored her first goal in the 5th minute and Michela Auguardo recorded clean slate number two of the season. It was Atlantic 10 victory number one for the Explorers. The Temple Owls fell 4 – 1 to Tulsa at home ending a two-game winning streak. Roisin McGovern scored in the 29th minute assisted by Lexy Enders that cut the gap to 3 – 1. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks dropped a pair of league games. Saint Joe’s lost to Dayton 3 – 2, then went to Olean, NY where Saint Bonaventure beat them 1 – 0 on a penalty kick in the 31st minute. Goal Keeper Katie Cappelletti made 17 saves over the week. The Villanova Wildcats came up on the losing side twice in Big East play, losing 2 – 0 at Xavier and 3 – 2 at DePaul. The Wildcats got second half goals from Niki Molina and Lauren Belcoure in Illinois, but would get no closer. Nova is looking for their first league win.

Villanova will be the only team playing a home game this week when the host the Providence Friars. In the Atlantic 10 the La Salle Explorers and Saint Joseph’s Hawks take to the road with La Salle heading to Washington for a game with George Washington. Saint Joseph’s heads north to play at Fordham. Penn will also go to New York for a game with Columbia. Temple and Drexel will go to the south. Temple plays at ECU. Drexel meet William and Mary. All games will be in conference.

DREXEL 5 – 4 – 1 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 1 – 0 at College of Charleston

Summary – The Cougars had more shots, 11 – 8, more on goal 4 – 3, but Schoyen saved all four. O’Reilly scored her second goal of the season assisted by Delaney Lappin.

Next Game – October 10 at William & Mary

LA SALLE 3 – 7 – 2 Overall, 1 – 3 – 1 Atlantic 10

Results – Won 1 – 0 vs. Rhode Island, Lost 2 – 0 vs. Richmond

Summary – In the win over URI Vinkler had 6 shots, 3 on goal. Against Richmond Kelli McGroarty sent 6 shots away, 4 on goal, but none got past the keeper for the Spiders.

Next Game – October 10 at George Washington

PENN – 6 – 2 – 2 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 Ivy League

Results– Won 2 – 0 vs. Cornell

Summary – The Quakers put 3 shots on goal and gave up but one. Goal Keeper Laurence Gladu posted her 4th shutout.

Next Game – October 9 at Columbia

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 9 – 2 Overall, 2 – 3 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 3 – 2 vs. Dayton, Lost 1 – 0 at St. Bonaventure

Summary – The Hawks took a lead against the Flyers when Natalie Nivins scored in the 6th minute. After falling behind Izzy Greene tied it in the 17th minute. Italia Gemelli won it for Dayton in the 67th minute, her second of the game. Dayton put up 21 shots, 13 on net to 7 and 4 for Saint Joe’s. The Bonnies had a 14 – 11 advantage in shots,  9 – 6 on goal to 11 and 6 for SJU. Over the week goal keeper Katie Cappelletti made 17 saves, 8 and 9.

Next Game – October 10 at Fordham

TEMPLE 3 – 4 – 3 Overall, 1 – 2 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 4 – 1 vs. Tulsa

Summary – The Golden Hurricane went ahead 3 – 0 before the Owls got their goal. Temple outshot Tulsa 15 – 14, but trailed 8 – 6 in shots on goal. McGovern scored her first goal of the season.

Next Game – October 7 at ECU

VILLANOVA 6 – 6 – 0 Overall, 0 – 4 – 0

Results – Lost 3 – 0 at Xavier, Lost 3 – 2 at DePaul

Summary – Villanova fell behind at the 4:19 mark at Xavier who had a 23 – 5 edge in shots, 5 – 1 on goal. The losing streak extended to five games where DePaul took a 3 – 0 lead before Nova got the last two goals of the game. The shots were 19 – 5 and 8 – 2 on goal in favor of the Blue Demons.

Next Game – October 7 vs. Providence at the Higgins Soccer Complex
