Villanova Gets a Big East Win, Saint Joseph’s Posts a Victory in the Atlantic 10, Penn Unbeaten Over the Week

The Villanova Wildcats began Big East play and start with a 1 – 0 win at Marquette. Balthi Sanders continued his goal scoring streak getting the only one of the contest in 28th minute. The Wildcats are on a 3-game winning streak. The Penn Quakers went unbeaten during the week getting a tie and a win during the home stand. The Red and Blue got a double overtime draw against Loyola, then beat Mount Saint Mary’s 5 – 1. Joey Bhangdia netted his third goal of the season in the tie with Loyola. Matt Leigh assisted twice in that game, then followed up with a goal against the Mount. Ben Stitz had a goal and 3 assists in the win. Leigh and Stitz lead Penn in scoring with 9 points each. The Saint Joseph’s Hawks earned a win in their Atlantic 10 opener hosting George Mason by a 3 – 1 score. All three Hawks goals were scored in the second half after they trailed 1 – 0. Tevin Lessey, Chris Hunt, and Omry Perel found the back of the net. Earlier in the week Saint Joe’s fell 2 – 1 at Rutgers. The Temple Owls had a marquee game scheduled against top-ranked Georgetown, but the game was postponed due to COVID protocols. The game will be rescheduled. The Owls returned to the pitch over the weekend, but lost to #18 SMU in a league game by a 4 – 1 score. Nigel Griffith scored his second goal of the season for the Cherry and White. The Drexel Dragons saw their modest two-game winning streak come to an end as Hofstra earned a 2 – 1 CAA victory. The Dragons got a goal from Kyle Tucker in the 88th minute to get close, but did not get the equalizer. The La Salle Explorers lost their Atlantic 10 opener 2 – 1 against Fordham. The game-tying goal for the Rams was scored by the dreaded own-goal. Earlier in the week the Explorers twice had a one-goal lead at LIU, but could not hold them. The hosts got the last two goals. Junior Nare scored a goal in both games.

The upcoming week sees all six schools playing road games the next time up. Temple has the longest trip going to Orlando for a game with UCF. Villanova plays at Penn State. The other schools are on a New Jersey/New York trek. Penn goes to Rutgers, La Salle is at NJIT, and Saint Joseph’s travels to Princeton for the New Jersey part of the schedule. Drexel crosses the Hudson for a game with Columbia.

Games of September 13 – 19, 2021

DREXEL 2 – 4 – 0 Overall, 1 – 1 – 0 CAA

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Hofstra

Summary –The Dragons goalie Cameron Sanders saved four of six shots on goal. Both teams registered 14 shots.

Next Game – September 21 at Columbia

LA SALLE 2 – 5 – 0 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 Atlantic 10                                                                                                                                       

Results – Lost 3 – 2 at LIU, Lost 2 – 1 at Fordham

Summary – Daniel Kim got the ball over the goal line for the Explorers at LIU. The game winner came in that game came in the 60th minute. The golden goal for Fordham was scored in the 64th minute.

Next Game – September 21 at NJIT

PENN – 3 – 1 – 1 Overall, 0 – 0 – 0 Ivy League      

Results– Tied 2 – 2 (2 OT) vs. Loyola, Won 5 – 1 vs. Mount Saint Mary’s

Summary – Bhangdia leads the Quakers with 3 goals. In the draw with Loyola Bhangdia gave Penn a lead. Each time the hosts took a lead the Ramblers would tie the game within minutes. Charlie Gaffney had the other Penn score. Loyola tied the game in the 75th minute. Mount Saint Mary’s tied the game at one early on the game over the weekend. Then the Quakers responded with 4 unanswered goals. Leigh got the initial goal, then was joined by Kai Lammers, Michael Hewes. Ben Stitz, and Stas Korzeniowski in the scoring column.

Next Game – September 20 at Rutgers

SAINT JOSEPH’S  2 – 5 – 0 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Atlantic 10

Results – Lost 2 – 1 at Rutgers, Won 3 – 1 vs. George Mason

Summary – The Hawks split during the week, but the win was in a conference game. At Rutgers Alex Hood scored his first collegiate goal in the 88th minute to bring Saint Joseph’s in proximity. Ola Maeland assisted on both goals by the Scarlet Knights. Nico Rosamilia netted the eventual game winner.

Next Game – September 21 at Princeton

TEMPLE 1 – 2 – 2 Overall, 0 – 1 – 0 AAC

Results – Lost 4 – 1 vs. #18 SMU

Summary – SMU scored twice in the first half within 5 minutes of one another. Temple got their goal from Griffth, assisted by Mike Eijgendaal, to cut the gap to 2 – 1. The Mustangs got two more in the second half after the Owls score. SMU had an 8 – 3 advantage in shots on goal. Temple played without goalie Eoin Gawronski who is out with a season-ending foot injury.

Next Game – September 24 at UCF

VILLANOVA 5 – 1 – 0 Overall, 1 – 0 – 0 Big East

Results – Won 1 – 0 at Marquette

Summary – Carson Williams made six saves including some stellar stops in the second half to earn his second shutout of the season.

Next Game – September 21 at Penn State
