Temple Finishes the Regular Season With a Shutout in Field Hockey

April 15, 2021 –

The Temple Owls closed out the regular season in field hockey on a three-game winning streak with a 4 – 0 victory over the La Salle Explorers at Howarth Field. The four goals scored are the most in a game for the Cherry and White since 2016. Taylor Alba found the back of the cage twice in the second half to pace the Owls.

Temple got off to a fast start on a goal by Veronika Novakova at the 9:06 mark, the only goal of the first half. Kerrie Lorenz got the offense restarted right after halftime, her second goal of the season off a penalty corner. Alba sent the ball over the goal line two plus minutes later, then ended the scoring at the 53:58 mark. Lorenz got two assists in the contest.

The Owls 15 – 6 edge in shots, 10 – 4 in the final thirty minutes of the game. La Salle had 4 shots on goal. Tatum Johnson and Samie Hackman recorded two shots apiece.

Over the course of the season Temple surpassed last seasons number of wins by one putting 8 in the win column. The five shutouts this season matches last seasons total.

The question now is will the campaign continue for the Owls? The team awaits its Big East Tournament fate. Old Dominion and Providence play two games over the weekend to decide the fourth seed. Temple needs a sweep by ODU to advance to the tournament. If the Cherry and White get a berth, they will come in with momentum.

“We are truly hitting our stride,” said Temple Coach Susan Ciufo. Our upperclassmen have been playing out of their minds knowing their time is running out. It’s nice to end the regular season with a win as we wait to see what happens for our Big East Tournament fate.”
