Villanova Stays Undefeated in Women’s Basketball

December 6, 2020 –

The Villanova Wildcats won their fourth straight game and the initial Big East contest with a 74 – 65 win on the road against St. John’s. Wildcats forward Maddy Siegrist led the team with her fourth double-double of the season getting 19 points and 15 rebounds, a season-high off the glass.

For the first time this season Nova trailed. They got the ship righted and went out to a 33 – 28 halftime lead. The Wildcats took control behind an 18 – 4 run to lead by 19 points at the 4:39 mark of the third quarter.

The Red Storm crawled back to within 11 going into the last 10 minutes. Twice St. John’s would get to within that margin, but Villanova would have the answer.

With 7:22 on the clock a layup by Wildcats guard Bella Runyan put her team in front by 16 points. The Red Storm would mount a final charge that the Cats would have to withstand. A 6 – 0 Villanova run increased the lead to 71 – 54. Then over the last 3 minutes the Red Storm would score 11 straight points, 9 by Leilani Correa who would score a game-high 21 points, to get to within 71 – 65. Siegrist would end it draining a three-pointer with 35 seconds to play.

Villanova had three other players score in double figures. Sarah Mortensen recorded a double-double getting 13 points and 10 rebounds, tops in her career on the main line. Brianna Herlihy added 13 points. Lior Garzon set her career-high in scoring with 12 points. She made 4 of 5 from the floor, 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.

The Wildcats continue to share the ball well getting 20 assists on 30 baskets. Of the eight players on the floor seven recorded at least one assist. Sam Carangi and Mortensen led the team with 4 each. Nova also hit 11 of 30 tries from the three-point line.

The Cats committed 19 fouls to 8 for the Red Storm causing a 14 – 3 disadvantage at the charity stripe.

Raven Farley scored in double-figures netting 12 points for St. John’s.

Villanova goes for their fifth straight win on Wednesday as they host La Salle.
