PHILLY COLLEGE SPORTS FOOTBALL WEEK IN REVIEW

Villanova Wins The Battle of the Blue, Temple Falls at Cincinnati, Penn Ends Regular Season

Villanova Wildcats won the Battle of the Blue over rival Delaware in convincing fashion at home 55 – 33.  The Wildcats were making their case to the FCS Selection Committee.  Nova was extended a bid to the Playoffs, but will have to travel to Southeastern Louisiana for a first-round game on Saturday.  Temple was trying to play their way back into contention for the American Athletic Conference Eastern Division title, but lost a tough game at #19 Cincinnati 15 – 13 with the winning points coming on a returned blocked extra point by the Bearcats.  Penn was closing out their season, and would end on a high-note if they could defeat arch-rival Princeton.  The Quakers did not and lost 27 – 7 at home.

Villanova got a career day from wide receiver Changa Hodge who caught 8 passes for 236 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He and quarterback Daniel Smith proved to be a lethal connection for the Cats.  In the third quarter they had an 82-yard touchdown pass, the longest pass play for Villanova this season.  Smith was 17 of 24 for 378 yards and 5 were for scores.

The Owls defense kept the team in the game.  Chapelle Russell had 11 tackles.  Quincy Roche recorded 7 tackles and 1.5 sacks.  He has 8 sacks in November.

Penn took an early 7 – 0 lead, but did not score again.  Running back Karekin Brooks ran for 95 yards to reach the 1,000 yard plateau (1,003).  He was the first player for the Red and Blue to reach that milestone since Joe Sandberg did so in 2006.  Brooks ranks third in program all-time rushing yards with 2,847.
