Saint Joseph’s Wins A Rivalry Game

Hawks Defeat the Explorers 67 – 58 at 20th & Olney

PHILADELPHIA, PA 1/312026 –

A rivalry that dates back over 100 years, the Hawks and the La Salle Explorers faced each other for the 146th time. This edition took place in a noisy, crowded Glaser Arena. By the end of the day St. Joe’s used their three-point shooting and a career-type performance from Dasear Haskins to defeat the Explorers 67 – 58.

Haskins tied his career-high with 20 points and 11 rebounds in posting his third double-double of the season. He hit 6 of 7 from beyond the arc to set another collegiate-best in that category.

“We’ve been working on the swing shoot in the last couple of weeks,” said Haskins. “And the big game, real competitive in practice, It’s been real fun just bringing the joy. They told us to bring that to the game.”

The three-point basket was a key weapon for the Hawks as they made 14 of 32 attempts. The Explorers hit only 3 of 19 as they concentrated on getting the ball closer to the basket, and had a 40 – 16 edge in points in the paint. La Salle had more field goals and shots (22 of 67) compared to Saint Joseph’s who had 22 baskets on 52 attempts.

La Salle countered with ab historic performance from Rob Dockery who set career-highs in points (26) and rebounds getting 14 for his first career double-double.

“Doc’s been better since he’s bought into the plan off two feet and being more explosive,” said La Salle Coach Darris Nichols. “The biggest thing about him is his practice habits have gotten better, it’s just carrying over to the game.”

The Hawks have won six of their last seven games, which makes it fun.

“Winning is so fun,” Haskins said. “I love winning so much. Especially when everybody’s playing good and we’re winning. Just enjoy it.”

This is a rivalry. It means something. It has gone on for a long time and should continue to do so.

“I’ve been through a lot of them, and never thought I’d be part of the St. Joe’s La Salle one,” said Saint Joseph’s Coach Steve Donahue. “I think about the incredible history of this program (La Salle), and Fran Dunphy, even all the La Salle guys. I’m close to a lot of the former players that went here and just to be a part of it. I say this all the time because I came from a city in Boston that doesn’t value college basketball. doesn’t have the rivalries. I hope we can keep this going. We do have something special. I know it was an A10 game, but it was also a Big Five game.”

“I felt some more energy than it’s been,” Nichols said. “Especially when you are trying to create something and trying to create energy. You want to feel it. You want to feel like that for every game. That’s our goal not to have one game feel different than any other game. You can definitely feel it.”
