Ja’briel Mace Sets Villanova School Records in Win Over Towson, Temple and Penn Suffer Defeats

November football, when things get really important in college football. Villanova extends its winning streak to six games and remain in the conversation for the league title and an FCS Championship bid. Meanwhile Temple and Penn lost impactful games. The Owls still seek bowl eligibility and the loss to Army dented those hopes. Penn wanted to stay in reach of the Ivy League title, but a loss to Cornell sets them two games behind league leader Harvard.

Villanova Wildcats 28 Towson Tigers 10

The Wildcats extended their winning streak to six games picking up an important victory behind the historical performance of running back Ja’briel Mace. He ran for a school record 291 yards on 28 carries to break the previous record of 287 yards in a single game set by Brian Westbrook in 2001. Mace also scored four times on the ground with touchdown runs of 8, 39, 82, and 22 yards. The 82-yard burst with 4:08 remaining, the ninth-longest scoring run at Villanova, in the fourth quarter opened the Villanova lead to 21 – 10. Mace ran for 93 yards in the first half, the second most behind Conor Watkins who had 107 in 2023, then put up 198 second half yards. This is the 9th 200-yard rushing game by a Wildcat in program history.

Nova had 353 yards rushing.

Villanova (7-2, 6-1) has two more regular season games on the schedule, next week at home against Stony Brook in conference before closing out the schedule hosting Sacred Heart. The team is in second place a half-game behind Rhode Island, and a half-game ahead of Maine and Monmouth.

Army Black Knights 14 Temple Owls 13

It was a hard fought, back and forth contest where Army was able to dominate in the second half in yards and time of possession to earn a 14 – 13 win. The Black Knights held the ball for 22:14 in the latter thirty minutes while the Owls had the ball for 7:40, and had but two second half possessions.

Temple led 10 – 7 at halftime. Army took the second half kickoff and went on a 14-play, 75-yard drive taking 8:21. The drive was capped by a 3-yard run by Army quarterback Cale Hellums. The Owls did not answer, but were in contention. The contest was decided in the fourth quarter. The Black Knights took possession on a punt with 9:53 on the clock at their own 42 yard line. They held the ball for the rest of the game which ended at the Temple 5 yard line.

In the deciding drive Army converted two 4th and one’s to keep possession. Hellums could have scored on separate runs, but went down short of the goal twice to keep the clock moving.

Hellums ran for a game-high 118 yards and a touchdown. Jake Rendina that other touchdown. Army ran for 224 total yards. Hellums completed one pass for 26 yards. Evan Simon led in passing yards throwing for 157 yards and a touchdown to Colin Chase. Owls linebacker Curly Ordonez recorded a game -best 10 tackles, the second consecutive week he has made double-digits in tackles.

Temple (5-5, 3-3) has yet to clinch bowl eligibility. The Cherry and White have a bye week next. The schedule does not get easier as they will host Tulane and then go to North Texas, both 4 – 1 in the American.

Cornell Big Red 39 Penn Quakers 17

On Homecoming Day the University of Pennsylvania fell to Cornell. The Big Red took the Trustees’ Cup back to Ithaca for the first time in four years.

The third quarter decided the contest. Cornell led 13 – 10 to start the second half. On the initial possession the Quakers fumbled giving the ball to the Big Red 24-yards away from the goal line. The visitors scored three plays later on a 3-yard run by Jordan Triplett. After taking possession on a punt Cornell added a touchdown on a Gannon Carothers 22-yard run. Again, Penn was forced to punt and Cornell answered with another Carothers score. The Quakers did stop a two-point conversion and blocked an extra-point kick. It was not enough as The Big Red opened a 32 – 10 lead.

The Quakers did mount a charge when David West scored on a 75-yard touchdown run, the longest scoring run since Malachi Hosely put up a 96-yarder against Cornell in 2023. West led the rushing attack with 125 yards. Liam O’Brien posted a touchdown run of 4 yards.

Triplett led Cornell on the ground with 85 yards. Quarterback Garrett Bass-Sulpizio went 24 – 31 in the air for 265 yards and a touchdown t o Brendan Lee. Wide Receiver TJ Hamilton caught 5 passes for 123 yards. Cornell outgained Penn 448 – 304.

Penn drops to 5 – 3, 3 – 2 in the Ivy League. They play Harvard in Cambridge next week. The Crimson holds a two-game lead over the Quakers in the standings. Harvard leads the conference by a game and a half over Yale.
