Saint Joseph’s Concludes Home Schedule With A Win Over Davidson

PHILADELPHIA, PA. 2/24/2016 – The Saint  Joseph’s Hawks women’s basketball team concluded its home schedule with a convincing 87 – 54 win over the Davidson Wildcats.  It was the final regular season home game for three seniors Ciara Andrews, Jordan Strode, and Sarah Fairbanks.  They will have a good memory of that Hagan Arena game, and it was thanks to the sophomore class as Chelsea Woods scored a career-high 23 points and Sarah Veilleux with a career-best 10.

“We played together and that was a big part of where everything came from,” said Woods.  “Since we knew it was the seniors last home game we did it for them.  That was our main goal.”

The Hawks were fluid on offense as they shot 46.8% (29 for 62) and made 7 of 18 three-pointers.  There were 19 assists on the field goals, and Saint Joe’s had a 49 – 30 edge in rebounding.  Ten of the eleven SJU players scored.  Kathleen Fitzpatrick had 12 points as she made 4 of 8 from three-point land.  Sarah Fairbanks scored in double figures netting 10.

“I was proud of how the team came out ready to play,” said Saint Joseph’s Coach Cindy Griffin.  “Everybody stepped up.  We did a good job controlling tempo, making shots, and playing together.”

On defense they held Davidson to 29.7% 19 of 64 from the floor, and the Wildcats turned the ball over 16 times.

Kianna Speight and Diona Johnson turned in 11 for Davidson and Mackenzie Latt had 10.

The Hawks took control of the game early.  In the first quarter a 15 point run put Saint Joe’s ahead by 17 – 5.  In the second quarter the lead would expand to 40 – 18.  During the remainder of the game the lead would balloon to as many as 39 points.

Next up for the Hawks (13 – 14, 7 – 8) is a trip to Richmond on Saturday.  Then the puzzle that is the seeding for the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Richmond will come into focus after that game.  The post season tourney begins on March 2.

“Based on what is going on around our league, it is going to be an exciting tournament come next week,” Griffin said.  “We are taking it one game at a time and our goal is to be .500 going into the Atlantic 10 Tournament and making a run.”

Saint Joseph’s wore pink uniforms in the game for Breast Cancer Awareness Night in honor of Kay Yow.
