PHILADELPHIA, PA. 12/29/2014 – The Saint Joseph’s Hawks took control of the game in the second half behind a 15 – 3 run, and closed the game making 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to earn a 61 – 54 win over the California State University Northridge Matadors in the consolation game of the Hawk Classic.
The Matadors led by five points in the second half when the Hawks went on their run. The advantage opened up to 44 – 37 at the 12:02 mark capped by a three-pointer by freshman guard Kathleen Fitzpatrick. CSUN got to within 51 – 48, but SJU responded. Fitzpatrick nailed her fourth basket from beyond the arc to open the lead to 56 – 48. The Hawks closed it out from the foul line.
Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 20 points and added 2 steals and 2 assists. Senior guard Natasha Cloud scored 11 points and handed out 8 assists, while junior forward Sarah Fairbanks contributed 11 points and 5 rebounds. Ashlee Guay led the Matadors with 12 points. As a team CSUN shot 20 – 63 (31.7%) and made 8 of 27 from distance. Saint Joe’s was 19 of 44 (34.5%) and made 5 of 12 from behind the line.
The Hawks concluded their non-conference schedule with a 4 – 8 record. SJU will open up Atlantic 10 play on Saturday against VCU at home.
