Coyer set a career-high with 19 points, 14 in the second half to propel Villanova past Temple in a Big Five contest at McGonigle Hall.

Stipanovich recorded her first double-double scoring 14 points and taking down 19 rebounds in the comeback win for Penn over Drexel

Week of December  16 – December 23, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 4 – 6 Overall, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results – Lost 84 – 58 vs. FIU, Won 66 – 58 vs. Tennessee State both at the Gator Holiday Classic

Summary –

FIU 84 La Salle 58 – A 19 – 5 run over 6 minutes of the first half gave control of the game to FIU in the opening round of the Gator Classic in Gainesville, FL.  Alicia Cropper and Michaya Owens led the Explorers with 13 points each.  The nations fifth leading scorer Jerica Coley scored 33 points for FIU on 10 for 27 shooting and 12 of 13 from the free throw line.

La Salle 66 Tennessee State 58 – The Explorers started quickly jumping out to a 24 – 3 lead midway through the first half.  La Salle held off Tennessee State to get a win in the consolation game of the Gator Classic.  Michaya Owens scored a game-high 19 points, 11 in the second half.  Owens also pulled down a team-best 8 rebounds.  Khristin Lee added 14 points and 7 rebounds.  Alicia Cropper scored 12 points to round out the double-figures scorers for La Salle.

PENN 5 – 2 Overall, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 46 – 44 vs. Drexel at The Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 9 – 2 Overall, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Lost 64 – 62 at. #23 Syracuse

Summary –

#23 Syracuse 64 Saint Joseph’s 62 – The Hawks eight-game winning streak came to an end as Brittany Sykes made a layup at the buzzer at the Carrier Dome.  Saint Joe’s tied the game on a floater by guard Natasha Cloud with 21 seconds on the clock.  Sykes drove to the basket releasing the ball at the buzzer for the win.  Each team would have a stretch to gain control,  SJU started the second half with a 15 – 2 run to give the Hawks a 45 – 35 lead with 15:46 on the clock.  The Orange fought back and lead 60 – 57 with two and a half minutes to play.  Hawks guard Erin Shields drained a three-pointer at the 2:20 mark to tie the game setting up the climatic final two  minutes of play.  Shields matched her season-high making seven three-pointers.  Cloud matched her career-high with 13 assists while scoring 7 points.  Forward Sarah Fairbanks scored 14 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.

TEMPLE 6 – 4   Overall, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Won 83 – 58 vs. Howard, Lost xx – xx vs. Villanova, both at McGonigle Hall

Summary –

Temple 83 Howard 58 – The Owls took control early behind a 15 – 0 run to take a 19 – 5 lead.  The advantage would grow to 49 – 35 at halftime.  The lead reached 20-points with 10 minutes to play.  Natasha Thames and Shi-Heria Shipp set career-highs in the game.  Thames scored a game-high 24 points and Shipp added 22 points.  Erica Covile scored 11 points.  Temple had a 41 – 28 edge in rebounds.

DREXEL 4 – 7 Overall

Results – Lost 50 – 47 vs. Hampton at the DAC, Lost 46 – 44 at Penn

Summary –

Hampton 50 Drexel 47 – The Dragons started strong taking a 14-point lead at halftime, 32 – 18.  But Drexel could only scored 15 second half points in dropping a 50 – 47 decision against visiting Hampton.   The Dragons could not quite hang on to a two-point lead with 1:20 remaining in the game.  Hampton took a two-point lead.  Sarah Curran tied the game for Drexel at 47, but Hampton would score the last three points from the foul line.  Curran scored 13 points.  Rachel Pearson matched her career-high with 19 points.
