Taylor Wootton – Player of the Week

Taylor Wootton scored a career-high 24 points against Hofstra and followed that with a 22 point performance against William & Mary.  The impressive play came on road victories that have given Drexel a 5 – 0 CAA record.  The road wins came via strong inside play that gave Wootton the opportunity to become a focal point of the offense.

Week of January 14 – January 20, 2013 Games

LA SALLE 5 – 13 Overall, 1 – 2 Atlantic 10, 0 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 95 – 47 at #18/17 Dayton, Lost 59 – 42 vs. Butler at the Gola Arena

Summary –

Dayton 95 LaSalle 47 – The Flyers made 21 of 30 field goal attempts (70%) in the first half to take a 51 – 22 halftime lead.  From there nationally ranked Dayton cruised by LaSalle 95 – 47.  Ebonee Jones scored 12 points for the Explorers, and Brittany Wilson added 10 points.

Butler 59 LaSalle 42 – The Explorers shot just 42% (16-66) in losing to the Bulldogs.  Butler’s Daress McClung had 19 points, 9 rebounds, 7 blocked shots, 5 assists, and 3 steals in the game.  Shanel Harrison paced LaSalle with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Next Game – 1/27/2013 at Temple

PENN – 7 – 7 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 1 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost vs. Villanova 48 – 44 at the Palestra

Summary –

Villanova 48 Penn 44 – The Red and Blue trailed by 2 with 27.1 seconds to play, but could not find the equalizer.  With 7.3 seconds on the clock Devon Kane nailed 2 free throws to ice the game for the Wildcats.  Alyssa Baron led Penn with 18 points.  For the complete story view “Villanova Wins Another Big Five Title.”

Keiera Ray was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

Next Game – 1/23/2013 vs. Temple at the Palestra

SAINT JOSEPH’S 12 –5 Overall, 3 – 0 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Won 80 – 67 at George Washington, Won 69 – 38 at Saint Louis

Summary –

Saint Joseph’s 80 George Washington 67 – Erin Shields scored a career-high 26 points allowing the Hawks to post an Atlantic 10 win in Washington.  Saint Joe’s led by as many as 22 points in the second half.  The Colonials closed to within 58 – 48 midway through the latter half, but got no closer.  Shields shot 7 – 12, 5 – 10 from beyond the arc, and made all 6 free throw attempts.  Natasha Cloud added 13 points and 7 assists.  Chatilla van Grinsven scored 11 points while grabbing 9 rebounds.  Ilze Gotfrida and Ashley Prim scored 10 points each.

Saint Joseph’s 69 Saint Louis 38 – The Hawks defense limited the Billikens to 25% shooting (14-56) in the road victory.  SJU took control late in the first half.  Leading 30 – 16 the Hawks went on an 8 – 0 run to take the largest lead of the game at 22 points.  Saint Joe’s shot 46.6% (27-58) and made 6 of 16 three-point shots.  Chatilla van Grinsven had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Shields finished with 13 points and 8 assists.  Natasha Cloud scored 12 points and handed out 7 assists.

Next Game – 1/26/2013 vs. Saint Bonaventure at the Hagan Arena

TEMPLE 7 – 10 Overall, 1 – 2 Atlantic 10, 0 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 53 – 51 vs. VCU at McGonigle Hall, Lost 65 – 45 at Duquesne

Summary –

VCU 53 Temple 51 – The Owls fell victim to an 8 minute scoring drought in the second half.  VCU used the 10 – 0 run to defeat Temple by 2 in their home conference opener.  Temple shot 28.6% for the game (20 – 70) and just 9 of 33 in the first half.  Rateska Brown did score a career-high 22 points to lead the Owls.  Erica Covile pulled down a career-high in rebounds with 12.

Duquesne 65 Temple 45 – The Owls fell behind early and never recovered in the loss to the Dukes.  Temple shot 20% in the first half and scored a mere 14 points.  That output matched the least scoring half of the season.  In the game the Owls committed 25 turnovers that gave the Dukes a 25 – 13 edge in Points Off Turnovers.  Rateska Brown led the Owls with 15 points and Tyonna Williams scored 13 points.

Next Game – 1/23/2013 at Penn

VILLANOVA 15 – 2 Overall, 4 – 0 Big East, 4 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 48 – 44 at Penn, Won 52 – 49 vs. USF at the Pavilion

Summary –

Villanova 48 Penn 44 – The Wildcats won their second consecutive Big Five title behind 19 points from Laura Sweeney, and 2 late free throws by Devon Kane.   For the complete story view “Villanova Wins Another Big Five Title.”

Villanova 52 USF 49 – Villanova’s Devon Kane made 3 free throws with just point 3 seconds on the clock to lift the Wildcats to the victory.  With the score tied at 49 Andrea Smith of USF missed a jumper with 8 seconds to play.  Villanova’s Taylor Holeman grabbed the rebound, outlet a pass to Rachel Roberts who found Kane.  The junior guard was fouled as she put up a desperation three-pointer that led to the decisive free throws.  Laura Sweeney led Villanova with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  Roberts scored 13 points.

Next Game – 1/23/2013 at Providence

DREXEL 12 – 4 Overall, 5 – 0 CAA

Results – Won 59 – 53 at Hofstra, Won 58 – 46 at William & Mary

Summary –

Drexel 59 Hofstra 53 – They are calling it “Comeback Thursdays” at Drexel.  The Dragons overcame another 15-point deficit in the win against Hofstra.  Drexel trailed 31 – 16 at halftime.  In that first half the Dragons shot 25% and twice went more than 4 minutes without scoring.  In the second half the Dragons turned the tables holding the Pride without a point for nearly 4 minutes.  The 12 – 0 run to the end gave the “Comeback Dragons” the win.  Taylor Wootton scored a career-high 24 points, 16 in the second half.  Fiona Flanagan scored 10 points.  In the second half her successive three-pointers gave Drexel a lead they would not relinquish.

Drexel 58 William & Mary 46 – The Dragons moved to 5 – 0 in the CAA behind the inside play of Taylor Wootton and Nicky Jones.  Wootton followed up her performance against Hofstra with 22 points.  Nicky Jones added 20 points while Hollie Mershon added 14 points and 5 assists.  In the second half the Dragons took control with a 16 – 4 run to take a commanding 41 – 26 lead.

Taylor Wootton was named the CAA Co-Player of the Week.
