Galloway averaged 21 points in two games over a 48 hour span. His 22 points led the Hawks against nationally ranked VCU. Saint Joseph’s nearly pulled off the upset, and then had to overcome the disappointment in a Big Five game against Penn. Galloway led the team with 20 points. He averaged 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds over the week. Galloway also made 11 three-point shots.

LA SALLE 12 – 5 Overall, 2 – 2 Atlantic 10, 2 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 72 – 70 vs. Dayton, Lost 70 – 63 at Xavier

Summary –

LaSalle 72 Dayton 70 – In a game that features 8 ties and 21 lead changes, the issue was not decided until Dayton’s Kevin Dillard put up a contested three-point shot at the buzzer that hit the back of the rim and bounced away. LaSalle played pressure defense forcing 24 turnovers leading to a 26 – 11 Points Off Turnovers edge for the Explorers. Tyreek Duren scored 14 points and had 6 steals. Xavier 70 LaSalle 63 – With the game tied at 26 the Musketeers went on a 9 – 1 run to take a 35 – 27 lead into halftime. Xavier controlled the second half. The Explorers tried to get back into the game behind a 9 – 0 run to get to within 7 points. Xavier stretched the lead back to as many as 16 points. Tyrone Garland led LaSalle with 16 points. Ramon Galloway added 15 and Steve Zack contributed 13 points.

PENN – 3 – 14 Overall, 0 – 1 Ivy League, 0 – 3 Big Five

Results – Won 54 – 53 at NJIT, Lost at Saint Joseph’s 79 – 59 at the Palestra

Summary –

Penn 54 NJIT 53 – The Red and Blue gained a historic win at Newark. Penn got win number 1,700 making the Quakers the 11th NCAA Division I program to achieve such a milestone. But it wasn’t easy. With the score tied at 49 Patrick Lewis-Perry drained a three-pointer with 2:12 remaining. Two more field goals down the stretch gave Penn the winning margin. Darien Nelson-Henry registered a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Miles Cartwright scored 12 points and handed out 5 assists. Chris Flores of NJIT led all scorers with 22 points.

Saint Joseph’s 79 Penn 59 – With the score tied at 17 with 7:39 to play in the first half Penn went into a scoring drought getting just 4 more points to halftime, 2 on a goal tending call. Darien Nelson-Henry was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week.

SAINT JOSEPH’S 10 – 6 Overall, 1 – 2 Atlantic 10, 1 – 1 Big Five

Results – Lost 92 – 86 at #22/19 VCU, Won 79 – 59 vs. Penn at The Palestra

Summary –

#22/19 VCU 92 – Saint Joseph’s 86 (OT) – The Hawks took a 79 – 75 lead with 28 seconds to play in regulation on 2 free throws by C.J. Aiken. Troy Daniels connected on a three at the 14 second mark. VCU quickly fouled Ronald Roberts who made the second of two. Daniel Theus raced down the court to put in the game tying layup with 8 seconds on the clock. In the overtime the Rams scored the first 6 points to take control. Langston Galloway scored 22 points. Roberts registered a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Carl Jones added 21 points, and Aiken had 15.

TEMPLE 12 – 5 Overall, 2 – 2 Atlantic 10, 1 – 0 Big Five

Results – Won 55 – 53 at George Washington, Lost 81 – 78 vs. Saint Bonaventure at the Liacouris Center

Summary –

Temple 55 George Washington 53 – The Owls overcame a 10-point deficit to win a squeaker 55 – 53 in Washington. It took for Temple to hold GW scoreless over the last 7:53 to get the victory. The decisive run was capped by a free throw by Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson with 31 seconds left to play. Khalif Wyatt led all scorers with 18 points, but shot 5 – 18 in getting there. Jake O’Brien was the only other Temple player to score in double figures with 10 points.

Saint Bonaventure 81 Temple 78 – The Owls lost to the Bonnies at home for the first time in 31 meetings. The defending Atlantic 10 champions also snapped a 6 game losing streak. Khalif Wyatt made 10 of 13 field goal attempts and was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line scoring 31 points. Jake O’Brien also broke double figures with 16 points. The Bonnies took control behind a 13 – 5 run over the halves to take their largest lead at 53 – 41 with 15 minutes on the clock. Temple crawled back into the game getting to within 69 – 68 behind 5 straight points from Wyatt. After a Saint Bonaventure three-pointer, Wyatt drove the lane but was called for his fifth personal foul. The Bonnies stretched the lead to 8 points from that point.

VILLANOVA 11 – 7 Overall, 2 – 3 Big East, 2 – 2 Big Five

Results – Lost 58 – 43 vs. Pitt at The Pavilion, Lost 69 – 66 at Providence

Summary –

Pitt 58 Villanova 43 – The Wildcats fell victim to a 15 – 0 run over the last 5:13 of the game losing to the Panthers. The 43 point performance represented the fewest points scored by Villanova at the Pavilion since the building opened in 1986. Pitt out rebounded Villanova 39 – 27, and the Wildcats got only 1 offensive rebound. Darrun Hilliard led Villanova with a game-high 14 points.

Providence 69 Villanova 66 – Bryce Cotton, the leading scorer in the Big East, scored 24 points to lead the Friars to victory. Villanova did not take care of the basketball committing 25 turnovers, a season high, and that led to a 30 -6 edge in Points Off Turnovers for Providence. Yet Villanova trailed by only 3 at 60 – 57 with just under two minutes to play. Providence stretched the lead to 8 points and took control. JayVaughn Pinkston paced the Wildcats with 20 points. Darrun Hilliard added 14 while Ryan Arcidiacono scored 10 points.

Next Game – 1/22/2013 vs. #5 Louisville at The Wells Fargo Center

DREXEL 6 – 11 Overall, 2 – 3 CAA

Results – Won 59 – 48 at William & Mary

Summary –

Drexel 59 William & Mary 48 – Frantz Massenat paced the Dragons with 19 points. Drexel led the game from start to finish holding the Tribe, the top scoring team in the conference to 33% shooting. Drexel led by as many as 16 points to snap a two-game losing streak.
